1999 OFFICERS
Presidents Corner

It would seem that soon it will be legal to charge a fee
for the use of your homebuilt in order to provide instruction for the purpose of type
checkout and for flight reviews. I believe that this is good news as it should increase
the safety of the first few flights of a newly built or purchased homebuilt. Stats show
that a large portion of accidents in homebuilts occur during the initial test phase. It
appears to me that the highly publicized John Denver accident was the catalyst that
brought about the anticipated changes to the FARs.
Dont forget that this coming Tuesday is the Banquet!! Please,
bundle up the family and come on out. Since this is the last time I will have this
forum to ramble, I am going to make it short. I am also going to take this opportunity to
wish everyone in Chapter 72 and their loved ones the VERY BEST THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.

Please join me in Congratulating our new officers, Don MacNiven, Chuck Grow, and Bill
Von Dane.
We are looking forward to maintaining the high energy level that Burrall has brought
the past two years. I know we all extend a great Thanks to both Burrall and Joyce.
Please take a few minutes to complete the enclosed membership form so that we can
update our database. We especially need to know what events, programs, fly-ins, fly-outs,
etc. you are interested in and where you might be able to help.
Sandy and I also want to wish all of you a very Happy and Safe Holiday Season. Richard

If you were at last months meeting, you might remember Craig
announcing that he had finally gotten his plane home to Meadowlake. I want to thank him
for letting us include his experiences in our newsletter. With Craigs approval, I
have reduced his seven pages to the story below. His entire story and pictures can be
found on the website. As I read his accounting, I was reminded of Richards similar
cross-country from Meadowlake to Daytona Beach, FL, in June. Im sure many of you can
relate to the weather, schedule changes, and especially the great people Craig met on his
journey. Enjoy!!! Sandy Martin

Lil O Cookout!
Thanks to everyone who came out to the cookout at the canteen last
month. Bob Hall and Chuck Grow were the volunteers...great job, guys. Unfortunately, since
Duke and Howard will be leaving that hangar, the canteen will no longer be available to us
after December. We had already decided to cancel the December cookout because of the
holidays. So well be looking for a new spot for January 22nd. Any ideas you have for
relocation will be most welcome.
As it turned out, for this last one, Bob estimated about 30 people in
and out from 9:00 to 1:00 last month and we took in about $43.00. That means we broke even
on the cookouts which is all we really wanted to do.
The intent is to have a regular place for members and other
folks on the airfield to meet and enjoy themselves and maybe even get some other chapters
to fly-in.
Again, any ideas are welcome. Just contact any of the other officers.

Ray Lynn - RV-8 - N630RL
BACKGROUND
Ray Lynn and his family had moved around a lot before he and his wife,
Sylvia, who quit counting their moves after they numbered 30, finally came to Colorado
Springs from northwest Tennessee in 1992. Since then, 5 of their 6 children have followed;
one is still in St. Joseph, Missouri.
His work as an engineer and raising 6 children kept Ray busy enough
when he was younger so he waited until 1987 to get his pilots license. He bought his
first plane in 1992, a Cherokee 235. He really liked the Cherokee but he wanted a new
aircraft and decided the answer was in homebuilts. He made sure that when his home was
being built he designed in enough room for his shop. Now, he just needed a project. After
doing a lot of research, he knew he didnt want fiberglass, but would consider metal
or wood. Interested in tandem seating and tail draggers, he went to Longmont to look at a
bi-plane or an RV-4. While there, he sat in an RV-8. A big deciding factor was the added
shoulder room in the 8 (33) compared to the RV-4 (27).
RV-8 PROJECT
Ray received his first RV-8 kit in September 97. He did get the
tail completed the first year but didnt have time for much else. However, this
second year he has completed the wings and the fuselage. Like other RV builders,
Rays experience with Vans has been excellent. Many of the parts, like the
empennage and wings, are pre-bent or pre-punched and THEY ALL FIT! The plans do require
the builder to make some parts. Ray went through his plans and made all of them at one
time which made it possible to just pull from his stock during assembly instead of
stopping to build when needed.
Ray pointed out the carpet on the shop floor, a tip he got from Loyd
Remus, whod put carpet in his garage while building his RV-4 saves the
knees. Ray has passed along the wing and fuselage jigs to Bill Von Dane with the caveat
that he keep them or pass them on. Ray had gotten them from Bob Hall.He also got a great
tool from Bob for bucking rivets that creates a really smooth surface. It cant be
used everywhere, but where possible, like the fuselage, its a great look. Some of
you guys will want to see a demo of that.

Completion
By the time Ray is finished he figures he will have 3 years and $50,000 in his
RV-8. That includes a a new 0360 Lycoming engine for $20,700 and $7,000 in avionics. He
plans to equip it for night VFR. Hell have flashing wing tip lights and strobes, a
wing leveler, and GPS. Some added touches will be black leather interior and a white lexan
panel. He knows someone who will do laser etching on the lexan that will result in black
lettering. The model cutout of his panel shows the instrument placement as well as the
flight checklist and engine failure recovery steps that will be etched into
the panel. He has his paint selected, white with neon red trim, and is working on the
final paint scheme.
Be Sure You're Right -- Then Go Ahead
War 1812
Davey Crockett
Whats next? Ray will be flying N630RL to Copper State (Arizona) in October 2000.
Sylvia has even promised to take one ride with him since he has put so much work into it.
Hes thinking he can talk her into at least 4 or 5 rides.
Then what? Well, he cant decide which he likes best, building or flying. He does
know that he cant do either one all the time, so maybe next a wood project. As I was
leaving Rays shop, I noticed a banner in the family room with the quote to the
right.
Ray explained that that quote was displayed in many Japanese factories as part of the
quality movement. He always liked it and traced it back to Davey Crockett, another
Tennesseean, during the War of 1812. I mention it here, because I get the impression that
that is the way Ray will decide what to do next; be sure hes right then go
ahead.

it. Also, they printed Loyds phone number, and he did get lots of calls.
Loyd would like to plan a couple events in 2000, with the next one being in January or
Feb ruary. National will help out with news releases. It was suggested that we ask folks
to RSVP to better plan the planes needed.
Program: Gil Gildersleeve brought his Pietenpol.
Gil took his first passenger, Bill Creech of the glider club, up on
Sunday, 11/07. Gil said he poor guy bout got blown to pieces. There was no wind
