PRESIDENTS CORNER
By Chapter President Burrall L. Sanders

The October meeting is soon to arrive and that means it will be time to nominate members for the election to be held at the November meeting. So, if you or someone you know is willing to take on an office, give Richard Martin (683-6587) or Larry Dale (635-7039) a call, or just be at the meeting on October 19. They are the nominating committee and will put the names in the hat. In fact, it would be a real good idea to be at the meeting anyway because if the nominating committee thinks you would make a good officer, they just might sign you up without your being there to object.

My term as President will expire at the end of this year and I just want to say I have really enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a very worthwhile organization. There are a lot of really terrific people in Chapter 72 and when it comes down to it, people are really what the EAA is all about. It is not an organization of airplanes. While airplanes and flying them are a passion to me, the main reason I got into aviation and remain is because of the friendships that have formed as a result. That is where it is at for me.

The upcoming October meeting will prove to be very interesting as Larry Dale has agreed to bring out his really neat amphibian Sea Hawker. Larry has had the airplane for several years and has performed many modifications and hopefully improvements to the airframe, He will be briefing us on the mods and changes and how the airplane flies. So, come on out for an excellent evening with air planes and their enthusiasts.

Best Regards, Burrall

OFFICER NOMINATIONS

Please come to the next meeting with your nominations in mind...

FEATURE BUILDER
Gil Gildersleeve

gil.jpg (17680 bytes)

Gil began his flying career in California getting his license in 1950 in a Luscombe 8A. Then aviation got pushed to the back burner while he did a tour of duty in the Army and began his family and career. It took awhile to get back to flying, but in 1984, as his youngest was leaving the nest, he fell in with the sailplane group at Black Forest Glider Port and that year started flying and got signed off for gliders

SAILPLANES

Gil got active in the sailplane bunch and then about 1985-86 found out about Chapter 72 and High Flight Soaring club here at MeadowLake, both of which he joined at that time. He also decided to start his first project in '86, a homebuilt motorglider, A Stojnik S2. The construction took from 1986-89. Gil now has 630 hours on it, while being active in High Flight and flying the nonmotorized versions. You will find him almost any Saturday or Sunday on the West side of the runway talking, teaching, flying or just giving rides with those quiet, long winged chariots.

PIETENPOL AIRCAMPER N199GP

Here lately he's begun to spend a little more time with the powered version. Three years ago this month project number 2 got started when he bought a Pietenpol project out of the rafters at Colorado Springs East airport from Darlene Williams, who had lost interest when her building pal left town. Gil figures it was 15% started but most of the materials came with it, so he began in Oct 96. He did most the building at home bringing it to the airport in April this year to cover and paint the wings and do the final assembly. Gil added 18” to the wings for the altitude here.

With about 6 hours dual with Anthony at Blue Sky in their Champ, Gil test flew the plane on August 20th and has 20.4 hours on it. He says he got" a big kick outa that", and would like to thank the McCombs, Bruce and Evan, for their comments, suggestions and help. He also believes he got a small amount of confidence in test flying it with the EAA Tech Advisor sign off it got from Evan before the DAR looked at it. The plane has been to 12,000' with a right and left 2 turn spin . I also heard something about 'racing cars', but it's made to cruise at 83-85mph, land at 35-40 mph and can get off in 500' or so. Next up is the last 4.6 test hours, the 1st passenger ride, an Arizona fly-in in March or so, and then maybe on to Oshkosh next year.

AVIATION NEWS

FAA Ok's Air Guard Flight

The FAA on Thursday gave final approval to the Colorado Air National Guard’s Airspace Initiative. Starting in 1991, this longtime controversy over low-level F-16 military training flights through the San Luis Valley and Wet Mountain Valley is apparently over with the approval of valley route, called VR-413.

The 140th Wing of the Colorado Air National Guard, based at Buckley Air Force Base, can continue with approximately 3,200 practice sorties each year. The MTR’s loop around southern and eastern Colorado and eastern Wyoming and converge at the Airburst Range near Fort Carson, south of Colorado Springs. YOUNG EAGLES

The Young Eagles met at Meadow Lake Airport on Saturday, October 9th. Channel 5/30 News was on site covering Dennis Krummel and his beautiful RV. While there, they discovered the Young Eagles and included coverage of the program during their early evening broadcast Saturday.

The youngest-at-heart Eagle was 91 year old Lillian Stipe who moved to Cessna Drive, Meadow Lake Airport, with her son Dennis Buschman and family. Lillian was thrilled with her ride in Hank Bartlett’s Cessna 150.

EDITORS COMMENTS

I’d like to introduce myself as the newsletter editor/publisher, Richard Martin. Having been the editor for Chapter 200 in Kansas previously, I , along with my wife Sandra, volunteered when Jean asked for someone to replace her. She’s done a wonderful job and I know we have big shoes to fill so I’m looking for any help I can get.

I’ll take articles any way I can get them, phone, fax, email, or just see me at the airport with my BD-4, N5576L.

I’ll also be calling on many of

you so that I can follow-up on your projects.

I’m also on the nominating committee, so if you have any ideas who might be a good chapter officer or if you want to be nominated just call me.

Richard Martin 683-6587
